Look Inward First

Look Inward First

One of my favorite Michael Jackson songs is “Man In The Mirror.” The lyrics have a profound message, teaching us to look inward first:

I'm Starting With The Man In

The Mirror

I'm Asking Him To Change

His Ways

And No Message Could Have

Been Any Clearer

When things don’t go as planned with sales calls or in customer service situations, the tendency is to point fingers at everything and everyone. Your first reaction, however, should be to examine the role you played in the situation and how you could have dealt with it better.

Your first question should be, “What could I have done better in this situation?” Take ownership and responsibility for your actions.

In other words, ask yourself what you need to change, what you need to work on. What were the lessons you learned so that the next time, you are able to achieve the closure that you want? Look inward at the “Man In The Mirror” first.
